Our Mission
Setting the standards, raising the skills.

Thatcham provide a unique range of products and services to insurance and motor repair industries worldwide. Primarily, we conduct research and produce data of interest to those involved in the efficient, safe and cost effective repair of motor vehicles and the reduction of personal injury and vehicle security claims. To achieve our aims, Thatcham’s research engineers work closely with vehicle manufacturers to influence the design of new vehicles; to improve safety and security and assist with designs which prevent or mitigate damage, whilst improving the ease of repair if an accident occurs.

Our Vision
Globally, vehicles are repaired safely, crash injuries are minimised and vehicle theft is eradicated.

We are best known by motorists for testing vehicle security systems and for our work in testing seats for whiplash prevention. Less well known is the fact that we provide some 70% of the data that insurers use to define a car's insurance grouping. We also test and accredit crash repair parts and vehicle repair technicians. Thatcham have an important role to play in raising the image of the body repair industry and addressing skills shortages. Thatcham's Automotive Academy delivers training courses that are mainly focused on the needs of insurance engineers and repairers, whilst our dedicated apprentice centre, opened in 2005, makes a major contribution to the training of young technicians. Over 7000 delegates a year benefit from our tuition.

Increasingly, our products and services are sought by markets overseas, with Thatcham repair methods available in the United States, Australia, the Far East, South Africa and Europe. We welcome delegates to the Automotive Academy from throughout the world and sends trainers globally to deliver our courses.

With new vehicle technology resulting in increasingly complicated vehicle design, the need for defined repair processes is vital. Thatcham have been instrumental in the development and implementation of a Vehicle Body Repair Standard, which has resulted in UK bodyshops achieving accreditation to a set standard which is independently audited. This standard is now being studied by other countries that recognise the importance of such standards.

A founder member of the international Research Council for Automobile Repairs (RCAR), Thatcham has also been a member of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) since 2004. Euro NCAP has an unrivalled reputation as one of the world's leading organisations which is driving forward vehicle safety, whilst offering invaluable advice and test results direct to consumers.

Our Values
Passion-Integrity-Innovation-Accountability

The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, or Thatcham as we are widely known was established in 1969 by British Insurers. The Centre is independently operated with a Board of Directors drawn from more than 30 insurer members who fund our work.

Thatcham is a not-for-profit organisation. Our main aim is to convert our research into practical solutions targeted at containing or reducing the cost of motor insurance claims, whilst maintaining safety and quality standards, and a strong independent aftermarket.

Employing over 160 members of staff, the Centre is well equipped with a range of collision repair equipment which is used for both research and training purposes. The Centre also has a vehicle impact testing laboratory and a sled facility for non-destructive testing. In 2004, Thatcham achieved ISO9001:2000 accreditation - recognition of our commitment to maintaining and improving quality.
